St. John of God

           St. John of God

People thought this saint was going mad … Turns out, it was just the Holy Spirit. Meet John Ciudad. A man who would one day be a saint.

However, on this day, he wasn’t a saint yet—not even close. The day we’re meeting him, St. Sebastian’s Day, January 20th, 1537. At this time, he was a Spanish soldier turned bookseller, running a shop in Granada, and living a fairly ordinary life.

But late in the afternoon on that January day, something happened. On this feast day, a famous preacher, St. John of Ávila was giving a sermon. John Ciudad listened in when suddenly, something about it struck him so deeply that he publicly broke down in tears. John ran through the streets confessing his sins loudly and began to immediately give away all his belongings.

People thought he had lost his mind. Authorities took action. They sent John to the Royal Hospital of Granada and locked in a ward for the insane. It wasn’t a pleasant place. Patients were restrained, beaten, and neglected under the belief that this would drive out their madness.

Rather than despairing, John was relieved at this sudden change of events. The conversion that the Holy Spirit had given him on St. Sebastian’s Day left him longing to serve God and to give to others.

Looking around at the harsh conditions of this psych ward he was unwillingly placed in, John was pleased. He saw the suffering around him and realized that these were the people Christ was calling him to serve. Rather than resenting his captors, he began to comfort the other patients, helping them however he could.

Eventually, St. John of Ávila visited and advised him to temper his zeal with wisdom. John took this to heart, left the hospital, and dedicated the rest of his life to serving the sick and poor.

John later founded a hospital where he cared for the very same kinds of patients—including those considered mentally ill—giving them dignity, attention, and medical care long before such treatment was common.

So, meet John Ciudad, although he was not a saint when we first met him a few paragraphs ago, he is now, and he more commonly is known as St. John of God. So, meet St. John of God!

We’re not often like St. John of God. When we are in uncomfortable or unimpressive places, we don’t often look around with pleasure. More often than not, we sigh and ask, “God, what am I supposed to do with this?!” But you can be like St. John of God! In fact, you are called to!

As Catholic beliefs are being threatened by ideologies present in the current political climate, it is crucial for Catholics to lean into prayer. Giving our concerns to God and asking for the strength to defend our faith in this battle is the most powerful way in which we can change the future of this country.

died on September 5, 1997, and was highly regarded for her generosity and love of the "poorest of the poor". Her ministry was very difficult, and it was only through her deep love of Jesus that she was able to stay close to Him for many decades. When the Catholic Church canonized Mother Teresa in 2016, the Office of Readings for her feast chose her final letter written hours before her death.

            - but that is because that is all Mother wants for you. If in your heart you are only all for Jesus through Mary, and if you do everything only all for Jesus through Mary, you will be a true Missionary of Charity. Thank you for all the loving wishes you sent for the Society Feast.

We have much to thank God for, especially that He has given us Our Lady’s spirit to be the spirit of our Society. Loving Trust and Total Surrender made Our Lady say “Yes” to the message of the angel, and Cheerfulness made her to run in haste to serve her cousin Elizabeth. That is so much our life -- saying “Yes” to Jesus and running in haste to serve Him in the poorest of the poor.

Let us keep close to Our Lady and she will make that same spirit grow in each one of us. September 10 is coming very close. That is another beautiful chance for us to stand near Our Lady, to listen to the Thirst of Jesus and to answer with our whole heart. It is only with Our Lady that we can hear Jesus cry,

and it is only with Our Lady that we can thank God properly for giving this great gift to our Society.

And now I have heard that Jesus is giving us one more gift. This year, one hundred years after she went home to Jesus, Holy Father is declaring Little Flower to be a Doctor of the Church. Can you imagine – for doing little things with great love the Church is making her a Doctor, like St. Augustine and the big St. Teresa of Avila! It is just like Jesus said in the Gospel to the one who was seated in the lowest place,

On this day, many parishes around the world proudly take the Holy Eucharist out to the streets in procession. This public demonstration of love and faith is one of the strongest evangelistic celebrations in the life of the Church.

in just the first year after his beatification, the Diocese of Assisi said the day before his feast day, Oct. 12, 2021.

The two miracles attributed to the intercession of the teen involved alleged miraculous recoveries for a young boy in Brazil in 2013 and a young woman in Florence in 2022. The miracle Pope Francis recognized May 23 that paves the way for the Blessed’s canonization involved a young woman who was born in Costa Rica in 2001 and moved to Florence in 2018 to study. The woman fell from her bicycle at 4 a.m. July 2, 2022, and suffered a serious head injury, according to the dicastery website. Even after emergency surgery removing part of her skull to reduce severe intracranial pressure, doctors warned her family she could die at any moment. An associate of the young woman’s mother began praying to Blessed Acutis the same day, and the mother went to Assisi and prayed at the Blessed’s tomb July 8 — the same day the young woman began to breathe on her own again. She slowly recovered basic mobility and a CT scan showed the hemorrhage was gone. After a period of rehabilitation therapy and a complete recovery, she and her mother visited his tomb Sept. 2.

Pope Francis has urged young people to learn about Blessed Acutis, who “did a great deal of good things,” despite his short life. “Above all, he was impassioned by Jesus; and since he was very good at getting around on the internet, he used it in the service of the Gospel, spreading love for prayer, the witness of faith and charity toward others,” the pope told young Italians Jan. 29. “Prayer, witness and charity” were the hallmarks of Blessed Acutis’ life and should be a key part of the life of every Christian, he said.

This weekend we start our annual pledge for Our Catholic Appeal collection in the Diocese of Orlando. Our Christian call to be good stewards of our time, talents and treasures enlighten us to be good sharers of all our gifts, and put them in the service of others, especially for the people in most need.

Through the money received on this appeal, the Diocese of Orlando can serve and touch many people, including us in our parish community. I appeal to you to try to collaborate with this collection whatever amount your financial situation allows you.
In a few weeks we’ll start the beautiful season of Lent in which our Christian Catholic Faith asks each one of the followers of Christ to be more aware in the practice of Prayer, Fasting, Abstinence and Almsgiving or Charity; in pondering in our hearts, and being grateful for the many blessings the Lord pours out in our personal lives. Also, the Gospel of Jesus teaches us that there is more joy in giving than in receiving, and that if we give from our hearts, we will receive a hundred measure more.
I hope that in recognizing these blessings, our hearts will be touched, and we will be generous with our campaign. Praying that the Lord continues to bless our parish family and our generous sacrifice to help us to reach our goal.

Life is Messy by Matthew Kelly

Can someone who has been devastatingly broken become more beautiful than ever before? The answer is "Yes"!

Some ideas are so powerful that simply becoming aware of them changes our lives forever.

Matthew Kelly powerfully demonstrates that we cannot live the life we have imagined unless we learn to tend the soul.

team suggesting we address a pervasive problem: The use of the Lord’s Name in vain in the public square. It’s everywhere! On TV shows, in your kids’ school – even in commercials and children’s programming. But as Catholics, I think we should do more than just gripe about it. Here are five ways

           you can

start defending the Holy Name of God today.

            ONE -

Meditate on the tradition of the holiness of God’s Name, which stretches back to when God gave Moses the Ten Commandments. After all, the second of those Commandments was

“Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.”

Christians worldwide also acknowledge the sacredness of His Name every time we pray the Our Father:

            “Hallowed be Thy Name.”

Speak up! In all likelihood, you are already in a position to reduce the number of blasphemies against God’s Name daily. Whenever a friend or acquaintance is careless with the Name of God, you have an opportunity to defend Him.

Be careful with this one – it’s no good coming across as a scold, and the use of “God” and “Jesus” as cheap exclamations in everyday speech has become so common that many individual offenders can hardly be blamed. Nonetheless, if you sense the possibility of a fruitful conversation, say with a close friend you know respects your opinion, go for it!

Use body language! I know of one recent Catholic convert who came up with an ingenious way of witnessing how seriously he takes God’s Name: Every time he hears someone misuse the Lord’s Name, he simply, quietly makes the sign of the cross. His method is unmistakable and, frankly, makes some people quite uncomfortable. If you’d like to do something similar but subtler, another option is to merely bow your head at the Name. In fact, for centuries, the rubrics of the Mass also required the faithful to bow their heads whenever they heard the name of Jesus.

Here’s a fun one, which is especially useful to parents of children who are in danger of adopting the bad habit of using God’s Name in vain due to influences in media or school: find replacements!

In my own home, one child has developed the habit of shouting “Oh my biscuit!” in moments of severe frustration.

And for those who’ve really lost themselves to the all-too-common habit of blurting out

This isn’t the first time in history people have blasphemed, and the Church has a long tradition of encouraging the faithful to make amends for the abuse of God’s Name. That’s right, you can honor God by making “acts of reparation” for the use of His Name in vain – even on behalf of others.

O Jesus, my Savior and Redeemer, Son of the living God, behold, we kneel before Thee and offer Thee our reparation; we would make amends for all the blasphemies uttered against Thy holy name, for all the injuries done to Thee in the Blessed Sacrament, for all the irreverence shown toward Thine immaculate Virgin Mother, for all the calumnies and slanders spoken against Thy spouse, the holy Catholic and Roman Church. O Jesus, who hast said: "If you ask the Father anything in My name, He will give it to you," we pray and beseech Thee for all our brethren who are in danger of sin; shield them from every temptation to fall away from the true faith; save those who are even now standing on the brink of the abyss; to all of them give light and knowledge of the truth, courage and strength for the conflict with evil, perseverance in faith and active charity! For this do we pray, most merciful Jesus, in Thy name, unto God the Father, with whom Thou livest and reignest in the unity of the Holy Ghost world without end. Amen.

Cardinal Burke notes that the world today is ravaged by hatred, confusion, disease, starvation, and war. It seems as though everywhere we turn, there is another story of an attack against the Church and the faithful. But it is now more than ever, he says, that we must remain hopeful.
Cardinal Burke reminds us that this is not the first time in history that the world has been in this state. In the early 16th century, the world saw much of what we are seeing today, and a bishop wrote

Jesus’ real and true presence in the Eucharist is at the core of our Catholic Faith. It is this belief that separates our worship from all other Christian and Non-Christian worship services. Whether the choir is great or poor, whether the preaching is inspirational or boring, whether there are a thousand who attend or a mere handful, Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior is present. He invites us to consume His Body and Blood, so that we may be transformed in ambassadors of His love to our families, friends, and all others we may meet.

Proof of this fact has been documented by miraculous events that have taken place throughout the centuries. One such miracle occurred in Florence, Italy in 1230 A.D. A distracted priest left a few drops of the Precious Blood in the chalice after mass. The next day when he returned to celebrate mass in the same church, he found in the chalice drops of living Blood that had coagulated and turned into Flesh. The Blood was then shown to the nuns, the bishop, and to the people of the city, and then placed in a crystal cruet.

The Spanish Charismatic Group of Holy Spirit will reopen its prayer group. The group enjoys support of the church’s hierarchy from the Pope to the dioceses as a recognized ecclesial movement.

The name Charismatic is identified with the grace of the gifts and charisms that the Lord bestows on his Church. The Holy Spirit is the source of the Renewal of the Church of Christ. The purpose is to strengthen communion among other Catholic Charismatic Renewal, as well as to promote for unity among all other charismatic prayer groups and in the whole Body of Christ, the Church. The prayer group deepens the grace of baptism that one had received.

As in the early days of Christianity , the prayer groups conduct themselves in prayer worship, proclaim the Gospel, reach out to the marginalized, evangelize in different ways, share ones faith, relate with Jesus and experience the presence and fruits of the Holy Spirit. The group through those with the gift of healing conducts healing to members in need of physical and emotional healing.

The number of charismatic members reach millions all over the world and Holy Spirit Lake Wales will be part of it. Johnny Nasser, coordinator of the HSSCG (Holy Spirit Spanish Charismatic Group) and Linda Dizon, Director of Faith Formation invite parishioners and non parishioners to join us and experience the presence of the Holy Spirit as we come together in prayer during this Lent.
